The building started its life as City Hall in 1572 after the Town Hall that had been there was blown up in a gunpowder explosion. It became the location of the Luxembourg government in 1817. In 1890, it became the official residence for the Grand Duke. The Nazis turned it into a concert hall during their brief stay, but it returned to its residence status after World War II.
The military still performs some ceremonial functions in front of the building. The ballroom is used for official state functions.
We get a little peak of the place here.
