Oberwesel, Germany: The Ox Tower
The Ox Tower - called Ochsenturm by the locals - certainly stands out from its position along the Rhine. It checks in at 40 meters high, and has a diameter of 12 meters. It's actually sophisticated as these things go. The tower can be heated and it has a few sophisticated features that help in its mission to fend off enemies.
The building has a more peaceful purpose now. There's a device that helps ships navigate their way down the Rhine. That function used to be served by having flagmen on the town.
Making wine is the big industry of the town of Oberwesel, which has a couple of old churches within its boundaries.
