The population of Speyer essentially moved after French King Louis XIV destroyed the place in 1689. About 10 years later, the people returned to the area. That included a Protestant group that used a temporary facility around 1698. Work started on something more permanent in 1701, but the going was slow thanks to a lack of money. Finally in 1717, the place was finished. Services took a break from 1792 to 1814, thanks to some troops from the French Revolution.
It's not the biggest or oldest church in town, but a building that has about 300 years of service attached to it must be doing something right.
