Golubac, Serbia: Golubac Fortress

Location, location, location.

The three most important words in real estate come in to play here. If you want to build a strategic military post on the Danube, you'd want to place it right at the entrance (assuming you are traveling downstream) of the Iron Gates of the Danube. So this place has been in demand over the years. It's a good place for a toll booth, to put it in modern terms.

The Romans first put a settlement here, as part of protecting their lands south of the Danube. Then in the 13th century, the first part of the fortress went up. It seemed that everyone in the region had the fortress at one time or another - Turks, Bulgarians, Hungarians, Austrians and Serbs. The building finally stayed with the Serbs in 1867.

The place was called a tourist area in 2011, and planning started to fix the place up. It took a lot of haggling and millions of Euros, but eventually the place was refurbished and opened for tourism in 2019. It has proven to be a popular draw, particular for tourists on the cruise ships on the Danube. That may lead to economic development in the immediate area, which would be appreciated by the sound of it.

It's interesting to walk around the towers and the connecting areas, and the views of the river are fine. An hour ought to satisfy the most curious of those with an interest. Or you can take a minute and 18 seconds and see this video.
