Ruse, Bulgaria: Pantheon of National Revivals

This is an odd-looking monument. Approaching it, the visitor knows it is something important, but has no idea what.

Know what an ossuary is? I didn't either. It is something of a crypt, designed to hold human remains. Several famous Bulgarians are resting there now, although the list might not have any names who would be recognized by Americans. Many others are there, including members of Botev's detachment. That's a group that tried and failed to lead a revolution in 1876. However, it lit a spark that eventually led to independence.

The dome in the facility has an eternal flame under it, and a chapel and a museum are part of the area. This all was constructed in 1977, and a church in a cemetery had to be taken down to make room for it. To compensate, a cross was placed on top of the dome.

I will say that it makes more sense from above.
