In 1943, Vidin's leaders prevented Nazi officials from deporting members of the Jewish community to the death camps during World War II. This was the equivalent of a thank-you note. However, more than 11,000 Jews from other countries who passed through Bulgaria did perish in the Holocaust.
Sadly, the only reference on line to the tribute concerns the defacing of the statue in 2017. The mayor of Vidin called this "outrageous and unacceptable." The monument was quickly cleaned up.
