Such is the case in Chester, where the walls haven't come tumbling down yet. The Romans took over around 70 A.D. and started building them. About 30 years later they changed building material to sandstone. It took about 100 years, but they finished the original job. Then, about 1,000 years later after the Norman conquest, the new owners got around to almost completely encircling the city with the walls.
It's a nice tourist attraction, checking in at 1.8 miles. The catch probably is the upkeep. Anything that old might need some repairs from time to time. And it does.
