York, England: York Minster

Yikes. This is one ... big ... church.

Welcome to the York Minster, the centerpiece of York's Old Town area and one of the most impressive churches in a country and a continent that are full of them. The wow factor here is very high, even by the standards set by the other cathedrals in Europe.

This has been the home of a church for almost 1,400 years, but the new facility is no kid either. Construction started in 1220, and it took a mere 252 years to finish it in 1472. The East Window has more medieval stained glass than any such place in the world.  I believe it's about the size of a tennis court.

As you'd expect, renovation is an ongoing process here. The biggest project in 1984 with a good-sized fire. Responders managed to limit the damage as much as possible by throwing tons of water on one part to collapse it and save the rest of the building. It was all finished by 1988.

It's tough to publish one photo in this space. I took about eight more, and they all came out high in capturing the grandeur. But a video helps.
