Korcula, Croatia: Marco Polo's Birthplace

Is this the spot where Marco Polo, the famous explorer, was born?

The people in Korcula sort of think so. Or at least they hope so.

Many scholars who have looked into the situation think Marco was born in Venice in 1254. But others, particularly in Korcula, believe that there was a family piece of land here and that Marco was born on it.

While other Europeans beat Marco Polo to China, his explorations in the later stages of the 13th century were the first to be "written up" and widely read. It was like opening a door to an entirely new world.  There is a museum about Marco in the area with a small entrance fee.

The disputed area is right next to the Church of St. Peter. That building dates back to the 14th century, and St. Peter is shown above the front door.

Here's a look at some items about the explorer that is from a video that is a handful of years old.
