Zagreb, Croatia: The Art Pavilion

Location is said to be important when it comes to real estate, and it's probably true for museums as well. They need a nice setting to add to the good feelings when the customers come for a visit.

The Art Pavilion is one of the best spots of real estate in Zagreb. It is in a U-shaped area of parkland, with a nice piece of open space between the building and the train station.

There's a fun creation story behind this particular place. Budapest put on a big party for its 1,000th anniversary in 1895. Artists from Croatia were invited to attend, and the country constructed a structure that was held in place with an iron skeleton. That way, the whole building could be transported to Croatia after the exposition. It took a couple of years to finish the job.

The Art Pavilion has a constantly rotating series of exhibits, rather than having a collection on permanent display. It's the only museum in the city that can handle a good-sized show, and there's some value in that. The museum suffered some serious damage during the 2020 earthquake, and it wasn't open during our visit in 2026. It shouldn't be long, though, before the doors are open again.

We need to go back in time via video to see what the inside looks like.
