Zagreb, Croatia: King Tomislav Monument

It's good to be the King, as Mel Brooks once said. It's also nice to be remembered.

The King in question here is King Tomislav of Croatia - indeed, the first person to wear that crown. It seems that he had the job from 910 to 928, but the title was formalized in 925. Tomislav successfully merged the nations of Pannonia and Dalmatia, and led the fight when the Bulgarians got frisky. He supposedly worked out a deal with the Byzantine Empire to help fight Bulgaria off, and the reward may have been the chance for the country to keep large parts of coastline under Croatian control. Tomislav is on Croatia's 1,000 km banknote, although Euros circulate there now.

As for the statue, it was created from 1928 to 1938. However, political times were rather difficult, and the statue stayed out of sight until 1947.

A big party was held in 2025 throughout the region, as the 1,100th anniversary of Tomislav's reign was celebrated. That came 100 years after the 1,000th year observance, when Dunvo became Tomislavgrad - in other words, named after him.

Here's a better look:
