Zagreb, Croatia: Tesla Statue

If you visit the American side of Niagara Falls, it won't take long to bump into a tribute to Nikola Tesla in the visitors' area. That's not surprising, since he made important contributions in the field of electricity (alternating current).

But he is a big name on the other side of the Atlantic too. Tesla is something of a rock star in Croatia, even now. You can still pick up a t-shirt with his image on it in Zagreb. Then, as we can see, there's this statue of him located in the center of Zagreb.

Nikola was born in what was called at the time the Military Frontier of the Austrian Empire in 1888; it is in Croatia today. He eventually moved to the United States in 1884, and did some important work in the field of electricity there. Part of that was to work on the electrical generation that came out of taming Niagara Falls around 1895. He died in New York in 1943, and his ashes are in the Tesla Museum in Belgrade.

If you want to call him the Edison of Eastern Europe, be my guest. Three hundred patents are a sign of his outstanding work.
