Cape Town, South Africa: Houses of Parliament

If you find yourself on Parliament Street in downtown Cape Hope, you probably think you'd soon be seeing the Houses of Parliament. And ... you'd be right. Mostly.

The country's national legislature has been there for quite a while, but there were usual problems getting the building done. Queen Victoria started the ball rolling in 1853, but not much was accomplished on the project for several years. Finally, though, the open for business sign was posted in 1884.

It stayed that way until January 2, 2022. That's the day a fire broke out in the structure, and it caused major damage to two of the buildings in the complex. They have been working on repairs ever since. It is hoped that everything will be done and ready for business by the middle of 2027.
