Few were funkier than Rick James, one of Buffalo's top contribution to the music world.
James first collected attention in the music world with his 1978 work, "Come Get It!" But three years later, Rick released what is considered his best work, "Street Songs." It spent 20 weeks as the No. 1 song on the R&B chart. The album's biggest single was "Super Freak." It was hard to top that, but success continued to follow him in the years to come.
James had several other top-selling albums and even played in a band with Neil Young for a while. He went into producing later in his career. James died of a heart attack in Los Angeles in 2004. Rick always was a big supporter of his home town of Buffalo, so it is quite fitting that he's here.
We still remember you, Rick.
And now, here's an interview with David Letterman.
