The picture doesn't do this part of Glacier National Park justice; it's one of the best places on earth.
That's in part because it's something of a surprise -- visitors park their cars, walk several yards up a hill ... and St. Mary Lake and the surrounding mountain envelop the viewer. The reason is that the point is on a peninsula, so there's little in the way.
The lake goes a few miles to the east and west from this viewpoint, and it has that blue-green color associated with snowfall runoff.
There used to be a hotel complex here - we're talking 1915 or so. But during World War II, tourism took a dive, and winter weather did some serious damage to the facilities. The National Park Service gave up on the idea of a hotel here in 1948.
