Alpine County, California: Carson Pass

Head south out of Lake Tahoe, and you'll find all the open space and scenery you could ever want. There are only a couple of people per square mile in this area, according to the tour book, and that's easy to believe.

Carson Pass is the way through the mountains toward the coast on Route 88. It's 8,574 feet above sea level, and it is located in the middle of the Sierra Nevadas. The area has a visitors' center, open in the summer (meaning we missed it), and a small monument to Kit Carson.

The region is known for its wildflowers. If you want to see them at full strength, then July is the time to visit the region. FYI, the Pacific Crest Trail crosses right through here.

As the photo shows, there's a lot of snow up there ... even in June. Looks like you can only hike up there for only a few months a year.
