Spitz, Austria: Hinterhaus Castle

The Hinterhaus Castle has seen better days. That's only fair, since it has been around since the 1100s. The first documentation of the place came in 1243.

It was a great place for a castle/fortress back then, since the owners could control the entire Wachau Valley from here. You can go up there and look around; the views remain superb according to all reports.

Better yet, this is completely free of charge to visit. And you can go 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All they need to do is sell Slurpees, and they are set to be a 7-11 outlet too.
