You don't see many buildings that reflect the past and present so dramatically. Even so, that's not really the point of this structure. It was more of a case of making do.
This downtown building in Bucharest served at one point as the home of the secret police for Romania. You can imagine how popular that place was, particularly after the Revolution.
But no one wants to see a good piece of land go to waste. The Architects Union needed some place for a new headquarters. They built a new inside and a new top, but left the outside alone. You can still see the bullet holes in the lower portion, which certainly adds to the drama. This is the way it has looked since 2004.
Ugly? Imaginative? You decide. But it does attract attention.
