Budapest, Hungary: Széchenyi Chain Bridge

You can't go to Budapest without going across the Chain Bridge. Well, you shouldn't, at least.

It's a major landmark in the city, as it was the first permanent bridge to cross the Danube in Budapest's history. It connected Buda, to the west, with Pest, to the east. This was considered an engineering feat at the time, and it still looks good now.

The lions at each end give the bridge a good feel. They went up in 1852. The structure received some remodeling in 1914 and made it through the first World War, but that didn't help in World War II. The Germans blew it up while retreating in 1945, leaving only the towers. Once the war ended, the Hungarians went back to work and had it back up in 1948.
