It was built in 1869, before this part of the world switched from the Ottoman Empire to Romania. Some of the building material is said to be left over from a fortress that was demolished in 1828. Between World War I and World War II, some argued that the building should be destroyed because it had become unsafe. But it survived that argument. Then in World War II, the Soviets bombed the structure, and it looked like it's time was up. No, it survived, and was even restored after the Revolution.
The Mosque is still standing, although it's in a rather crowded small neighborhood. It has achieved historic status, though, and it likely to be around for some time.
