The Memorial to the Victims of Communism stands only a few strides from the riverbank along the Danube River in Vidin. Since many tourists arrive through this venue, it's a great location.
The structure was built around 2002, with a formal opening in September of that year. It contains the names of several people who were murdered without a trial in 1944, and of others who were sentenced to death in 1945 - including generals, bankers, and ministers.
We'll assume no one is anxious to return to the good old days of Communism. But this building needs some upkeep badly. It is permanently locked and mostly ignored. Various parts of government supposedly have traded "it's not our problem" remarks, and it could be demolished.
You'd think they could do better than this.
