Vienna, Austria: The Ferstel Passage

There is a sign in German in the Ferstel Passage that translates to "accessible until further notice." It's hard to know how long that will be, but this route through the Palais Ferstel that was based on Parisian designs deserves to be used and saved.

This was built in the late 1850s, and was designed to be something of a shopping mall before the term was used. By 1900, members of Vienna's High Society used to walk around and mingle here.

As for the building, it started out as a bank and as the home for the Vienna Stock Exchange. It's interesting to note that the designer, Heinrich Freiherr von Ferstel, currently lent his name to the passage, but it wasn't his idea. The public started calling it by this name in the 1980s.
