We give a tip of the hat to Austrian artist Friedenreich Hunderwasser for this one.He came up with a design for a building that is absolutely unique, and the finished product has created a tourism district around it.
Hunderwasserhaus was a typical painter in the 1950s, but by the 1970s he had come up with some unique and personal ideas for building designs. They included trees as part of the building design and the right for every tenant to choose his or her own windows. Hunderwasser thought that created more harmony between nature and man. In 1977, he was invited to created an apartment building of his own design.
That eventually got built in the 1980s on the site of a tire repair shop. The floors aren't level, the roof is made of earth and grass, and tree limbs grow out of the windows. The totals include 53 apartments, four offices, and 250 trees and bushes.
Those who live in the apartments got sick of people wanting to get inside, so there are "do not disturb" signs around. Instead, people hang out on the street below and stare it ... when they aren't visiting the souvenir shops on the blocks. It's a fun area to visit, as long as you aren't too traditional when it comes to architecture.
