It's a tribute to those in Austria who died during the Holocaust around World War II (1938 to 1945). It's set in a university district of Vienna, and placed in a park-like setting - good for reflection.
A Year of Remembrance was declared in 2018, and Austrians thought it would be good to set up a memorial to the victims. The federal and city governments came together with the private sector to fund the project, and the memorial opened on November 9, 2021.
There's no sugar-coasting here. "Murdered" is used on the inscription at the entrance. By the way, outside of the memorial is a tribute to other groups who were persecuted by the Nazis.
And remember - this tribute was about one percent of all of the people killed in the Holocaust. One percent.
