London, England: Monument to the Women of World War II

In a city full of monuments, it took quite a while for London to recognize the contribution of women to the effort of winning World War II. But in 1997, retired Major David McNally Robinson thought it was about time to do exactly that. After all, other countries in the Allies had honored the women in this way. Seven million women had a role in the victorious effort, and 650,000 were in the military service.

The sculpture is something of a coat rack, showing women leaving their normal lives to help defeat the Axis powers. They all have different uniforms. It was unveiled in 2005, 60 years after V-E Day. Queen Elizabeth, who was a teenage mechanic during the war, did the honors.

The monument is on Whitehall, an important street in British history, and fits in nicely. About time.
