Christopher Wren designed it, and the building was completed in 1669. The facility is named after Gilbert Shelton, a chancellor at Oxford. It was designed to host graduations and other solemn activities, as apparently sometimes the graduates back then became a little rowdy upon receiving their diplomas.
The building is used to today for a variety of activities, including lectures, concerts, conferences, etc. The first play was staged there in 2015, oddly enough. The structure seats around 800 to 1,000 people, probably depending on the event.
The inside looks like a nice place; too bad it wasn't open during our Easter Sunday visit.
