Canastota, New York: Boxing Display

Those interested in boxing history certainly ought to stop in the little town of Canastota, New York. You can either have your lesson served in long form or in short form.

This is the short version.

Just across the street to the entrance/exit to the New York State Thruway is a small tribute to two of Canastota's favorite sons. It seems that Carmen Basillo and Billy Backus both came out of this town, and both turned out to be world champions in boxing.

It's only fitting that the two most famous people to come from Canastota get their own salute. As you can see, their boxing robes are on display in the center of the small room. It also contains photos and clippings of the career of the two fighters - who were related as uncle/nephew.

It's a little easy to miss, but there's a way to make sure to see it. The area is found right next to the entrance of the parking lot to McDonald's. So why not stop for a Big Mac and a little lesson on boxing.

The long version of boxing history is across the street, where the Boxing Hall of Fane is located. That's worth a stop if you have an interest in the subject and enough time to enjoy it.
