Corner Brook, Newfoundland: Al Pittman Memorial

It's always nice to see a tribute to a writer in a city, and Corner Brook chose one of Newfoundland's best when it decided  to salute Al Pittman here. The plaque honoring Pittman is located on a rock in downtown Corner Brook, and it was placed there in 2012. It was located on the lawn of the Western Star newspaper, where he worked. (Since this plaque went up, the paper went from a daily to a free weekly. Another sign of the times.)

Pittman wrote six books of verse and also contributed two plays to the culture. In the 1970s, writer Sandra Gwyn called him "the Newfoundland Renaissance."  Pal and artist Gerry Squires took charge of the effort to salute Pittman, which took more than 10 years from his death to come to fruition in this form.

You can hear Al talk about where he liked to write - in taverns - in this short video.
