St. Kilda, Australia: Luna Park

Many people become nostalgic at the thought of old-time amusement parks. It's a nice memory associated with childhood. Many around the world have closed for one reason or another, perhaps because the land became more valuable and the park became less popular. But some of them remain open. No, they don't have the pizazz of a Disney theme park - or as high a price. But they have charm.

Luna Park is one of those places. It's on the beach in St. Kilda south of Melbourne. This one has been around since 1912, but the roots go back a bit more. The place is modeled after Coney Island in New York, which opened in 1903. As you'd guess, Mr. Moon's face on the entrance became somewhat iconic for the area's residents.

The highlight of the place, like similar operations, is the roller coaster. The Great Scenic Railway is the oldest wooden coaster in the world. The wood helps add a little excitement to the ride, as it has a little give when compared to the metal monsters. Besides, the views of the bay are said to be excellent. A carousel has been around almost as long as the park itself.

The facility received a facelift about 25 years ago, and looks to be good for several more years. Kids 13 and older can ride all day for $55 (Australian). We've been saving the front seat in the coaster for you.
