Michael Joseph Savage was the first Prime Minister of New Zealand to represent the Labour Party. Savage was born in Australia but moved to NZ at the age of 35. He helped created the Labour Party in 1916. Savage was elected to the House of Representatives in 1919, and became the leader of his party in 1933. It was on to the Prime Minister's job in 1935, and he won reelection in 1938. Within a year, New Zealand joined Great Britain in declaring war on Germany.
But soon after his reelection, Savage's health took a turn for the worse. He died at the age of 68 in 1940. Savage is the only New Zealand Prime Minister to serve under three English monarchs, thanks to the abdication of Edward VIII.
Upon his death, work began on coming up with a resting place for Savage. A spot eventually was picked that overlooked the nearby harbor. Savage is considered one of the greatest prime minsters in the country's history. His warm style led him to be known as "Everybody's Uncle."
Savage's memorial features a sunken garden and an Art Deco design. You don't have to be from New Zealand to appreciate it.
