Fiordland National Park, New Zealand

It's not exactly easy to get to Fiordland National Park. The roads have two lanes, the streets aren't exactly straight and fast, and it rains a lot.

But the views along the way? Terrific. It you aren't going to make good time, you might as well stop and smell the, well, area.

The Park is located in the southwestern part of the South Island of New Zealand. It's almost 5,000 square miles, and there doesn't seem to be an ugly spot in the place. Fiordlands mostly consists of mountains with valleys carved out by glaciers.

British explorer James Cook sailed by the area in 1770, but didn't have time to stop. The place became a national reserve in 1904, and was designated as a national park in 1952.
