That's the problem with this statue of William Gilbert Rees. He was the first European to discover the area of Queenstown, and settlements date back to his arrival. Rees had a farm there, and he turned it into a hotel when gold was found in the region. But, he's posing next to a sheep rather than a room key or luggage cart.
The problem, naturally, is that people had been in the region for thousands of years. So he didn't really "find" anything. But winners write the history, so Rees gets to take a bow. We'll let you sort out the ethics of this issue, which comes up a lot in this region. Nice location, though - right on the waterfront.
