Welcome to Mrs. Macquarie's Chair - a must-sit spot when visiting Sydney. She was married to the Governor-General of New South Wales in the 1810s, and apparently she loved to sit on the rock and watch the ships from Great Britain roll in on the harbor. The spot was right on the shoreline. It got to the point where the government built a road to make that trip easier for her. It's nice to know the boss. There's nothing left of that path, but it's fun to think about it. But the road is mentioned in the inscription above the "chair."
The spot is located near the Botanical Gardens, across a small bay from the Sydney Opera House. Most days, tourists come on buses and line up to have a photo taken of themselves sitting on a chair. I had to wait a while to get a picture of an empty chair, so consider it a rare photo.
A cushion would have been nice for Mrs. Macquarie, but those were simpler times back then. Here's a look at the area:
