Varazdin, Croatia: Anđelinjak

One of the fun points about art is that it can be adapted so easily to its surroundings.

Take "Andelinjak" in Varazin. There's a small alley off the main street of the Old Town that barely is wide enough for a walker. But artist Željko Prstec saw something in that space - opportunity.

He hung up a display of angels and cherubs in the alley, who therefore seem to be floating around the area. The fact that a church is next door adds to the illusion. Varazin is "the city where angels sleep," but they seem to be awake here.

You can also see some locks on the gate of the alley. They often are used by people as a symbol of their affection - sometimes in overwhelming numbers. (For proof, go to Amsterdam some day.)

Andelinjak is a nice way of filling up an odd piece of urban space. Other cities should be taking notes.
