Gander received a great deal of praise for the way this town of 10,000 people or so rallied when thousands landed on their doorsteps ... literally. This is one such tribute.
The Bethpage Fire Department of Long Island send part of a beam from the Twin Towers to Gander in recognition for its great work under impossible circumstances. It was placed on a block of granite that weighs 9,000 pounds, and was put in front of the Town Hall. The ceremony that marked its official placement took place on September 11, 2021 - 20 years later, in other words.
The area also had a display of "Never Forget" letters written by the school children of Gander. It won't take long to review it, but it's worth the stop if you are in the area.
