Zagreb, Croatia: Archaeological Museum

Since this part of the world has a great deal of ancient history to discuss, you'd think that archaeology would be a big deal here. Sure enough, a museum occupies a prime space of land in downtown Zagreb.

The facility holds about 450,000 artifacts, and the most famous of them is said to be "The Zagreb Mummy." If you can read Etruscan, you'll be able to see the longest string of text in that language in the world. (You also might want to apply for a job there.)

The museum suffered some damage in the 2020 earthquake, and they are still fixing it as of this writing. But the first floor is open for business on a limited basis. During our visit in 2026, there was an exhibit about the underwater heritage of the country taken from the Adriatic Sea.

At least we can take a look back and see what the facility was like before The Great Shake.
