Cape Town, South Africa: Labour Corps Memorial

This is a rather unusual memorial as these things go, and it was probably overdue as well. It's a tribute to Black South Africans who helped the cause in World War I. It was opened at the Company's Garden in 2025. Therefore, it took a mere 100+ years go get it done.

About 1,700 people - soldiers and workers - are saluted here. Each of them has an individual pillar, which was hand-carved. As you might guess, the whites who died in that era received all sorts of honors. Meanwhile, the bodies of Blacks were never retrieved. Families knew almost nothing of the circumstances of their deaths.

Some research was done, and that filled in some of the gaps. The memorial also provides some closure for the involved families - better late than never, I guess.
