Canyonlands National Park, Utah: Island in the Sky

As the tourbooks say, the area in Canyonlands National Park was the last part of the continental United States to be explored and charted. Can you guess why? This is rugged country and practically inaccessible in spots. There are three separate districts; Needles and the Maze are the others. Island in the Sky probably has a little more to see. The pictures here is from that district.

If I had it to do over again, I would have taken one of the guided tour boats that actually go into the bottom of the canyons in the Colorado. That's probably the best way to get the flavor of the place, as well as see the scenery up close. We didn't really have time on our trip, so we'll just have to go again.
