Visitors to Great Falls probably should have figured out before arrival that the city has a big waterfall. But that's actually incorrect; it has four of them ... and a fifth one - Colter Falls - that was so small it disappeared when a dam went into operation.
These actually have a role in American history. Lewis and Clark stumbled around them during their trip West.
Pictured is (are?) the Big Falls of the Missouri. That's Ryan Dam right behind it. It goes 87 feet high, and is very impressive. There is a suspension bridge on the way to Ryan Park, and it's a good place to experience the water's power. It's a bit of a drive on an isolated road to get there, but you should see the Great Falls when in Great Falls.
There's a viewing area on Island Park that has displays telling you what a great job the local power company is doing. Skip the signage; enjoy the view.
