Johnstown, Pennsylvania: Inclined Plane

The steepest inclined plane in the world - a 72-degree climb - is located in Johnstown. At least that's the claim, and I believe it. It's something of a moving platform designed to go up a steep hill. Not surprisingly, it's on the National Register of Historic Places.

This was built in 1891, only two years after the famous flood that devastated the city. The idea was that in case another flood was coming, city residents would have someplace to go to flee the waters. Sure enough, there were also floods in 1936 and 1977.

It was a big help to commuters who lived above the valley but worked in it, and it probably still is.

Besides, it's a fine view ... and a history lesson ... at the top. You can see just how the flood waters came down into the valley and wiped the place out more than a century ago.

It takes about 90 seconds to go for a ride on it, as the video shows. You should know that, as of 2026, the inclined was going through considerable renovations. Therefore, check to see if it is operating before making a special trip to see it.
