One of the fun parts of visiting foreign cities is to find out what its statues are all about. Take this one in Antwerp.
When I took a look at it, I wondered, "Who the heck is Arbeid Vrigjeid?" It turns out that Arbeid is not a name. It's a slogan: labor freedom.
Apparently the dock workers in Antwerp were a particularly important part of the resistance to the Nazi occupiers from Germany in 1944 and 1945. This is a tribute to them that sits in the old part of town.
