Spitzhauschen dates back to 1416 - a touch over 600 years if you are counting. It is a rather odd design for a building in that it's bigger on the upper floors than it is on the first floor. I've seen this in other places; there's a famous building in downtown building like that. The reason for the design is similar. Taxes are often based on the square footage on the ground. Therefore, having some extra space upstairs saves the owner some money.
In this case, supposedly the street was already rather narrow - so the owner opted to give the street a few more inches with this layout. Whatever, it works. By the way, the building supposedly has been a wine bar for more than 50 years as of this writing.
