Speyer, Germany: Ferryman Get Over

This sculpture was made for a special occasion - the 2,000th birthday of the city. It sits in the garden of the city's cathedral.

Here's what it says on it: Old Speyer legend: "The ferryman's dream" Coming from the cathedral, the emperors cross the Rhine to help the empire in great need. They call out: "Ferryman, overtake!"

Well, maybe emperors didn't rise from the dead in October 1813. But the Germans were freed from foreign rule along this time, and it's a nice legend to go with it.
