Strasbourg, France: National Theater of Strasbourg

Strasbourg had some work to do at the end of World War I. It was back under French control for the first time in almost 50 years, and the Germans had left some buildings behind. One of them looked on the Place de la Republique. That seemed to be a pretty good location as these things go.

So France gave the building to Strasbourg, who in turn handed the keys over to the National Theater of Strasbourg. Director Guy Ropartz was offered the chance to take over the Palace of the Rhine, but refused. The place took some hits from American bombers in 1944, but was quickly repaired.

Some of the functions of the group have moved to other locations. Still, it's been a nice century-long run in that spot.
