At the start of World War I in 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war in Serbia. The Russians immediately came to the aid of the Serbians, even though they were not exactly prepared to do so. The key point was the defense of Belgrade's two main rivers, and the Russians came along soon after the start of the conflict with a mine torpedo detachment.
Then in 1915, Russian soldiers died while fighting to defend Belgrade. They are buried in a common grave in the New Cemetery. A fleet of supplies eventually arrived from Russia when it was greatly needed.
At the century mark of the first action, the two sides reunited again for a ceremony in Kalemegdan Fortress. This monument was unveiled; it is in the shape of a cross with St. George the Victorious (the patron saint of both armies) on the design.
