Bucharest, Romania: Romanian Athenaeum

When visiting the Old World, a stop at a musical palace is always a good idea. Bucharest has one right in the middle of town with its beautiful Romanian Athenaeum.

The residents probably feel a little extra pride when looking at this, at least if they know the backstory. Construction started on this structure in 1888. However, the money ran out before the work ended. Therefore, the citizens of Bucharest needed to "pass the hat" in order to finish the job. They did so in a campaign called "Give a Penny for the Athenaeum."

The lobby is suitably welcoming, the acoustics are terrific, and the views are excellent. And check out the recreations of 25 important Roman moments on the walls.

Time to see what's here.
