A palace for the local Bishop had been on the site in the 19th century, but it was blown up in a bombing in 1849. It took more than 50 years to put something new up on the spot, and the city did so in 1901. A great many architectural styles went to it, including Serbian and Byzantine, which gives it a good look.
A Bishop still lives there, but more to the point this is a cultural monument for the city residents.
