Novi Sad, Serbia: Name of Mary Church

This sure sounds like a slightly odd name for a church. This might help - it is dedicated to the feast of the Holy Name of Mary. This Catholic church is the biggest religious structure in the city.

A church has been on this spot since 1719. It was destroyed in 1742, so they built another one. The new one was in good shape until 1848, when the effects of the Hungarian Revolution took a toll. So the city council eventually ordered a new one, which was more or less finished by 1893.

The locals supposedly call it a cathedral, but even though it's big and beautiful, it doesn't pass the test for that title. The headquarters of the Diocese is elsewhere in the region.
