Bay Bulls, Newfoundland

Bay Bulls started out as a fishing community - not unexpected since it is right on a very nice harbor. In recent years it's becoming something of a suburb to St. John's - by far the biggest city in the province of Newfoundland/Labrador. But boat rides are still a draw for the tourists, who want to take a look around the water. They don't go home disappointed.

Our group stopped there for a two-hour boat ride around the harbor, and it was quite impressive. We started by hugging along the shoreline to see some beautiful rock formations. Then it was on to the middle of the harbor, with a brief stop to admire a sunfish that was playing side of us.

Eventually we came within viewing distance of an island that's mostly known as a puffin reserve. There's must be thousands of them on the island, and some even fly out to greet visitors. You'll get the idea if you click on the photo to expand the viewing area. Great stuff.

Whales didn't hang around our ship, but no one asked for a refund. Just remember to dress warmly.
