Cape Spear, Newfoundland

Heading east on a walk? This is as far as you can go on the North American continent without getting wet.

It's Cape Spear in Newfoundland, located a few miles south of St. John's. The surrounding land isn't too far away in these terms, but something has to be said for being the farthest point out into the Atlantic, and this is it.  In other words, sunrise starts here.

A walk around the ground reveals a little history. You probably didn't know that there a couple of big guns right by the point. They were placed there in World War II in order to help protect St. John's Harbor. I think the cannons were only used a couple of times, once to shoot at an iceberg. They are still there, as is a protective tunnel behind it. The tunnel even has some war posters still up.

There's also a walkway up ... and up ... and up to a lighthouse overlooking the area. It's a lot of steps, so be forewarned. But the walk from the parking lot to the point is easy.

We love these geographic oddities. Yes, it's something good for a photo and then the visitor moves on. But having stood on the equator and the Prime Meridian in the past 13 months, it's quite a personal trifecta.
